Antique Chinese Ningxia Carpet.
China, first half 19th century. The centre medallion of this Chinese carpet is formed by a large 'Shou' character (which stands for longevity), surrounded by a circle of cloud bands and bats (symbol of happiness and joy) on an apricot ground. A beautifully drawn frettered dragon, often associated with power, strength and good luck, occupies each corner of the otherwise sparsely decorated field. A simple reciprocal key border is enclosed by a meandering lotus flower main border. This is a rare and very impressive carpet.
Wool on a cotton foundation.
