This Antique Caucasian Shirvan Long Rug was made around 1900.

Its restricted colour scheme of mainly blue, off-white and maroon is unusual. Very typical of carpets from this area, however, is the fine weave. A column of interconnecting concentric hexagonal lozenges forms the central axis of the field. Smaller, secondary medallions decorate the intervals between the lozenges. A number of animals are randomly distributed over the field. The main reciprocal border with its geometric design is enclosed by a blue-ground outer border with flower heads. The bottom of the field has marked abrash from royal blue into dark blue and almost black.

The wool of the pile is of excellent quality. It is woven with a woollen warp and a cotton weft, the sides are overcast in off-white cotton.

This Caucasian Shirvan rug is in excellent condition.
