Antique Bronze and Ormolu Candelabra.

Important pair of cast bronze and ormolu candelabra. Each of the classically dressed maidens stand on a raised dais above a rectangular Carrara marble column, holding a vessel with cascading fruits and four outstretched arms for candles.

The inverted panel on the front of each stand is decorated with an ormolu panel of cupid, the messenger of love, showing his strength by riding on the King of the Beasts. The whole is supported on a thick fossil granite Belgian marble base. A/F small chips. (Granite Belge) France circa 1790.

An almost identical pair can be viewed at Drottningholm Palace in Ehrenstrahal Salon. Sweden. The last two photographs are the candelabra in situ in the Swedish Palace, can you notice the small difference between them and mine?

Many of the fine bronzes were imported by Gustaf III in the 1780s and by Carl XIV Johan (Beradotte) after he become king in 1818, so it is believed they were purchased by either monarch.
