An American Hooked rug from the early 20th Century, with a fabulous colourful design, a central motif and intricate and well constructed stripe background. The rug is full of beautiful colours in the stripes and the border with four stars, one in each corner, in excellent condition all over. A wonderful and rare little decorative rug woven in 1910-1920 made with strips of fabric, making it around 100 years old today. It would look wonderful on the floor in a bedroom or low traffic area, or hung on the wall as piece of art.
These interesting hooked rugs made in North America began in New England and the Canadian Maritime Provinces in first 1/4 of the 19th century. It was during this period, that carpets were being imported from Persia, India and Turkey by wealthy Americans. It was less wealthy women who then decided to make their own rugs for the floor, creating these wonderful hooked rugs with left over fabric and using purchased fabrics cut into long strips specifically for that purpose. As beautiful Persian rugs in particular were desired by the wealthy, everyone wanted them. Generally the lady weaving the rug, created their own pattern, making each piece unique.
In 1864, Edward Sands Frost, of Maine began stencilling hooked-rug designs which he sold from a peddler’s cart. By the time he retired in 1876, he had cut about 750 stencils, these are now owned by the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. His designs included lions, tigers, leopards, dogs, cats, birds, deer, floral patterns, and patterns adapted from Oriental rugs.
Hooked rugs were originally created to be used as a decorative floor rug. By the 1970's they were used as wall hangings too when collecting American antiques was increasingly popular. Each American hooked rug is a very unique piece of art, with varying designs and a great deal of skill involved to create each one with strips of fabric.
