Alfred Edward Chalon  R.A. (attrib).
After Sir Edwin Landseer R.A. (English 1780-1860).
Queen Victoria and her two eldest Children.

This fine watercolour depicting a young Queen Victoria with her two eldest children is a faithful reproduction of Sir Edwin Landseer's oil painting now in the Royal Collection. The two children are Princess Victoria, the Princess Royal (b 1840) and Prince Albert Edward, later King Edward VII (b 1841).

In 1841 Landseer produced the original oil painting and by 1844 Samuel Cousins was commissioned for a black and white engraving which was then widely circulated. What is interesting about this present work is that the colours are true to those of the oil, so instead of following the engraving, the copyist must have been one of the only ones privileged enough to be allowed into the Royal Collection to copy directly from the original. Alfred Edward Chalon had recently been appointed the Painter in watercolour by her Majesty Queen Victoria making him by far the most likely to be the copyist. Additionally his own excellent oil portrait of Queen Victoria in her State Robes had recently been engraved by Samuel Cousins which indicates they already knew each other, therefore reinforcing the likelihood that Chalon is the artist in question. Perhaps the most likely scenario is that Chalon was on instruction from the royal household, commissioned to make this copy in watercolour, expressly for Samuel Cousins to work up the engraving from.

The work is housed in a quite superb plaster frame from the period.
