19th century bronze group of a standing and sitting hare by French animalier sculptor Alfred Dubucand (1823-1894). Finely detailed bronze with a good mid-brown patination. Signature 'DUBUCAND' incised to base. Foundry stamp on underside 'E V 1245'.
Alfred Dubucand was born in Paris in 1828. He studied under Justin Lequien and Antoine-Louis Barye and exhibited at the Salon from 1867 to 1883, winning a third class medal in 1879. He was a skilled animalier sculptor producing well modelled small groups of animals and occasinally equestrian groups.
He was known for his particularly realistic modelling of his subjects giving the appearance of life and movement. Some of his figures and groups include , Griffon attacking a Duck (1868), Spaniel and Hare (1869), Persian Hunter (1878) and Ostrich Hunt (1875).
