19th Century Walnut Baby Sutherland Table.

A Fine Quality Mid 19th Century, Victorian Walnut Baby Sutherland Table, Or Coffee Table, Having Superbly Figured Oval Two Flap Top With Elegant Marquetry Inlaid Decoration, Raised On Single Reverse Tapering Turned End Supports With Attractive Carved Decoration And Four Cabriole Legs With Scrolling Toes.

Generally Baby Sutherland tables are one of our best selling articles and can be regarded as one of the most elegant, but at the same time incredibly practical pieces of antique 19th century furniture available.

This particular one is veneered with attractive well figured walnut veneers and also boasts some lovely marquetry inlaid decoration. Another key feature is the single turned end supports which terminate with true cabriole legs, a feature that is rarely found and commonly regarded as the nicest and most elegant available.

It stands at coffee table height, which means that with both flaps raised it makes a great portable coffee table with the additional bonus of being able to have its flaps folded down and can be tucked away when not in use, taking up effectively no floor space whatsoever of consequence.

The term “Sutherland Table” is believed to originate from the first full size, non “baby” variants of these tables being named after The Duchess Of Sutherland, Mistress Of The Robes To Queen Victoria.

As with all items which we offer for sale this coffee table has been examined and attended to by our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture restorers and received a general clean, plus natural beeswax polish before being offered for sale. This means that it is very much in retail condition and ready to be immediately placed into the home.
