A fine 19th century statuary marble bust of Bacchante by Leandro Biglioschi (active 1813-1832). Signed LEANDRO BIGLIOSCHI SCU IN ROMA A. 1823
Leandro Biglioschi was one of Canova’s three studio assistants mentioned in G.A Guattani’s ‘Memorie Enciclopediche’ of 1810. An esteemed sculptor, Biglioschi was made Regent of the Virtuousi al Pantheon (the papal honour society of artists) in Rome in 1821. Prior to this honour, Canova himself had commissioned Biglioschi to model four marble busts for the Pantheon which are now in the Capitoline Museum.
Inspired by his mentor, Canova, the current bust is carved in the idealistic neo classical style but at the same Biglioschi manages to convey in her expression the sexual allure of the Bacchante.
