An extremely fine and large mid 19th century Sinhalese specimen wood centre table inlaid with ivory. The radiating woods are indigenous including calamander, Ceylon teak, tamarind, ironwood, pol-coconut, palm, rosewood and ebony. The centre is inlaid with an ivory disc beautifully engraved with an elephant.
Much of this furniture derived from English pattern books, but the carved and inlaid work was of local origin.
The whole is raised on the original carved rosewood base with three splay legs with concealed castors.
Circa 1850
