19th Century Rosewood and Brass Scent Box.

A charming and particularly good quality mid 19th century, Victorian period, rosewood perfume scent box, with attractive brass bound decoration and hinged lid, enclosing three original glass bottles (2 damaged).

This charming little vanity box which dates to the mid 19th century would originally have been made to house a lady's scents. Perfume was of course exceptionally expensive and seen as a great luxury so it was important to keep it locked away to avoid people helping themselves.

The box itself is constructed from highly figured rosewood veneers and banded with brass mouldings. It is much, much better quality than many we have previously come across and really is quite a lovely little box in its own right.

Contained inside are three original cut glass bottles. Unfortunately two of these are damaged and we have tried to highlight this in the imaging. One has a piece broken off the rim off the bottle, which clearly happened some time ago as the edge is no longer sharp in the slightest and the other has a crack in the glass across the shoulder of the bottle. It is however nice that the original bottles have been retained of course.

We think this would make a lovely little gift for somebody, or even a treat to ones self. Should you wish the glass bottles and divisions can easily be removed and put to one side, leaving you with a charming little lined box to use for whatever you may desire? Possibly jewellery or similar, much like an antique tea caddy to be honest.

The box has been attended to by our skilled, traditional antique furniture restorers before being offered for sale and as always received a natural wax polish. It also comes with working lock and key.

Circa 1850.

Height 3.75in.
Width 7.5in.
Depth 3in.
