19th Century Lesghi Runner.
2.86 x 1.10 metres.
Antique Lesghi rugs, originating in an area now broadly covered by modern-day Azerbaijan, represent some of the finest carpets from the region, well known for their bold, graphic designs, combining an expressive tribal charm with high-quality weaving.
This striking Lesghi runner, dating to circa 1880, is a wonderfully creative example of its type, showcasing a bold, spontaneous composition, with a star motif repeated in a wide range of vegetable dyed colours – including ivory, ochre red, cornflower and sage green – over a muted chocolate brown field, and framed by four individual borders; a diverse palette, which works to complement the dynamism of the composition.
Retained in very good condition for everyday use, though with some minor age related restoration, completed to a high standard. Incredibly, its original knotted fringes remain unopened, remarkable for a piece of this age – its colours have taken on a charming weathered patina.
A highly collectable piece, which would add tribal charm and personality to any interior.
