This Ersari main carpet dating to the 3rd quarter of the 19th century will be part of our exhibition "TRIBAL WEAVINGS. BAGS, RUGS AND CARPETS FROM IRAN AND CENTRAL ASIA" . It will run from 2 April through to 9 April.
The great quality of dyes and wool make Ersari carpets of this age so desirable: a very warm, deep madder red which is nicely abrashed, a range of blues and, importantly, a strong green and yellow, the latter in particular usually being a sign of good age.
The field design consists of three columns of six gulli guls. The secondary elements alternate between diamond shapes made up of diamonds with a cruciform centre and four-and-one squares creating a cruciform shape. This strong geometrical feature is echoed in the border, which is accentuated by a fairly liberal use of undyed white wool.
Wool on a wool foundation, with a brown weft, goat hair on the sides. Original red and blue kelim ends.
