19th Century Birdseye Maple Cupboard.

An unusual and very attractive mid 19th century, early Victorian, birdseye maple wood side cupboard. Having ebonised strung decoration throughout and two panelled doors, enclosing two fixed shelves, raised on elegant original faceted feet.

This attractive side cupboard was clearly originally designed as a utilitarian piece of furniture with a decorative twist. The proportions of the piece are incredibly useful, with it being nice and narrow, whilst not to narrow to be functional.

These proportions and the decorative nature of the design mean it would suit a whole variety of different spaces around the home including a hallway, dining room, kitchen, living room, bedroom, pantry, home office and more. It is also very robust and very much fit for original purpose in terms of useful storage.

Birdseye Maple is a particularly attractive wood which as the name suggests is a variation of traditional maple. Generally unmistakeable due to the distinctive Birdseye like figuring it is both highly decorative and relatively rare, due to the distinctive grain being caused by unfavourable growing conditions for the original tree.

It first become popular in the early 19th century and has been relatively widely used in fine furniture ever since. In the days when furniture was hand made, only the best cabinet makers would dare to use Birdseye Maple due to the huge amount of skill required in the working and cutting of the wood due to its divergent grain. It took many, many hours of hand planing to produce a successful high sheen when working with this wood.

As with all items which we offer for sale this elegant side cupboard has been attended to in our workshops, by our skilled, professional antique furniture restorers, who have used traditional techniques and natural hand waxing to ensure the item is ready to be placed immediately into the home after purchase.
