A fine quality mid 19th century padouk wood Anglo Indian centre table, having superbly figured circular tilting top with profusely carved frieze over central baluster turned column with stylised carved lotus leaf to quadripartite carved base terminating on original turned feet.

During the 2nd and 3rd quarters of the 19th century it was a regular occurrence for English cabinet makers to travel across to Bombay and other parts of India, where they would enjoy working with the wide variety of indigenous materials available to them in that particular area, of which padouk was one of the most popular and widely used.

These highly skilled cabinet makers would often take this opportunity to create more elaborate variations of the same items of furniture which they were regularly asked to make in a more restrained form back home.

This particular table is of a good size, slightly larger than any of this type that we have seen and would make the perfect hall table, or similar, whilst also being small enough to use as a lamp, or occasional table tucked away in the corner of a room somewhere.

It remains in excellent condition having been cleaned and polished in our workshops using traditional methods and boasts a lovely warm colour and patina.
