A charming 18th century Hepplewhite period commode chest of drawers of serpentine form, with bandings of purpleheart wood (amaranth) in the French taste. Original gilt-metal handles and side carrying handles apparently by Charles Elliot. The mahogany book-matched veneer drawer fronts have a wonderful pale golden colour, which is veneered onto an oak carcase. The whole is raised on four short square tapering legs ending in block feet. English circa 1780.
