About the object

An 18th century portrait miniature of an unknown gentleman, watercolour on ivory

In the original gold frame, the reverse with locks of hair tied with gold wire in the shape of a feather within gold mount and blue glass border 

This is a fine early example by Cosway, with an unusual green background painted at an early time in his career before he began experimenting with Antwerp blue tones

The position of the head in relation to the body resembles the work of Sir Joshua Reynolds.
