Circa 1750
Of baluster shape in octagonal form, the elegant lines of this fine Portland stone pedestal base leads ones eye up to the presentation of the large engraved sundial plate by the well-known maker of scientific and mathematical instruments, Thomas Wright. The circular brass plate is finely engraved with the hours and minutes and inscribed:
Made by Tho. Wright
Instrument Maker
to His Majesty GEO. II
Appointed to the King in 1727. Similar examples of Wright's sundial plates can be seen at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, and the British Museum London.
