18th Century Antique Chinoiserie Tavern Wall Clock by Samuel Thorndike, Ipswich.

A fine Georgian Tavern Timepiece with gilt and chinoiserie decorated case, by this established Suffolk maker. The round white dial has Roman numerals with outer minutes circle and enclosed by a molded surround. The shaped brass hands have heart shaped tips and the minute hand is counterpoised.

The case is fully signed beneath the circular dial, Saml. Thorndike Ipswich, and the trunk door is beautifully decorated with oriental figures within a garden landscape, the sides displaying chrysanthemum decoration, within a gilt border.

The weight driven movement has an anchor escapement, with steel rod pendulum.

Samuel Thorndike, Ipswich, born 1757, free 1780 and married in 1781, is recorded working in Butter Market until 1801 and died in 1819.
