A RARE MID 15TH CENTURY ENGLISH OAK SCULPTURE OF CHRIST CRUCIFIED.CIRCA 1450.

KNOWN AS THE ROTHERHURST CRUCIFIX, IT WAS DISCOVERED AMONG CONTENTS OF ROTHERHURST HOUSE , ROTHERFIELD, EAST SUSSEX. IT IS PRECISELY THE TYPE OF DEVOTIONAL SCULPTURE THAT ON THE EVE OF THE REFORMATION WOULD HAVE BEEN RESCUED FROM A LOCAL PARISH CHURCH FOR SAFE KEEPING TO AVOID DESTRUCTION FROM HENRY VIII TROOPS.

IT IS CONSTRUCTED FROM THREE PIECES OF ENGLISH OAK, THE MAIN HEAD, TORSO AND LEGS FORMING ONE PIECE AND THE TWO ARMS BEING THE COMPLETE SCULPTURE, ONE SMALL OLD REPAIR TO THE HEAD.
THESE EARLY PRE-REFORMATION SCULPTURES ARE EXTREMELY RARE TO SURVIVE DUE TO THE DESTRUCTION OF ALL ENGLISH MEDIEVAL CHURCH ART IN THE EARLY 16TH CENTURY ENGLAND UNDER HENRY VIII REFORMATION.

PROVENANCE- ROTHERHURST HOUSE, ROTHERFIELD, EAST SUSSEX.
THENCE FROM AN IMPORTANT COTSWOLD COLLECTION. ILLUSTRATED AND DOCUMENTED ON THE WEB SITE INVISIBLESAINTS.PARISH.ORG.
