A 15th century carved walnut figure of a male saint, circa 1490.

Probably Joseph of Armathea, in the manner of Tilman Riemenschneider (c.1460-1531), standing, wearing flowing robe, his left hand holding a casket, probably of ointment, on a moulded hexagonal base, traces of red and blue polychrome.

Provenance:

Dr. Peter Mangold Collection.

For comparable carved figures attributed to the workshop of Tilman Riemenschneider, see Sotheby's London, 2 July 2013, Lot 27 & 6 July 2021, Lot 3.

Saint Joseph of Armathea assumed responsibility for the burial of Jesus after his crucifixion, hence his portrayal carrying an ointment casket.
