 A SUBSTANTIAL AND RARE PAIR OF 14TH CENTURY ENGLISH MEDIEVAL LIMESTONE GARGOYLES. CIRCA 1320.

BOTH GARGOYLES WITH GROTESQUE HUMAN FACES WITH WIDE OPEN MOUTHS, ONE AS A KNEELING AND DRAPED HUMAN FIGURE, THE OTHER OF ZOOMORPHIC FORM. SQUATTING ON ITS HAUNCHES AND HOLDING A DOG BETWEEN ITS KNEES. BOTH THE GARGOYLES AND THEIR BASES ARE CARVED FROM ONE PIECE OF LIMESTONE. THE PARTICULAR STANCES OF THESE IMPRESSIVE MEDIEVAL GARGOYLES KNEELING OR ON THEIR HAUNCHES ARE DESIGNED TO PROJECT OUTWARDS FROM A VERTICAL STRUCTURE. A STANCE PARTICULARLY USED IN ENGLAND IN THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD, CLOSELY COMPARABLE EXAMPLES CAN BE SEEN ON THE CHAPTER HOUSE AT YORK MINSTER.
