John Ferneley Senior (1782-1860)

For BADA Week 2023 Strachan Fine Art have chosen to feature this striking equestrian portrait by one of Britain's finest equine artists John Ferneley Senior.

The work is a review order portrait of Colonel Ward’s charger, with ornamental bridle and the shabraque and sheepskin of The Royal Horse Artillery.  There are mounted soldiers, a gun carriage and an uncoupled field gun in the background.

Oil on canvas.
Signed, “John Ferneley F.  M.M. 1838”.

The information that this was Colonel Ward’s horse was inscribed on the reverse of the canvas before it was lined.  In 1855 a Lt. Colonel Ward of The Royal Horse Artillery served at the siege and fall of Sebastopol and at the Battle of Tchernaya.

Works by Ferneley can be seen in the collection of the Tate Gallery, The National Maritime Museum, The Fitzwilliam Museum and the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery.

The work will be on view on Strachan Fine Art's Stand at the CADA Fair which opens to the public from November 17-19, 2023 at Compton Verney, Warwickshire. Click here for further details.
