Bethlem Museum: Louis Wain's Cats

Bethlem Museum: Louis Wain's Cats - a private tour.

Tuesday 14th February at 2pm.

Louis Wain (1860-1939) was hugely popular during his lifetime with his work appearing in vast quantities in prints, books, magazine, post-cards and annuals.  His illustrations of cats in many comical situations were loved by many.

Despite his fame Wain never made much money and during the First World War suffered real poverty. Previously a mild and gentle man he began to develop signs of serious mental illness.  In June 1924 he was certified insane and lived in various institutions until his death.

Colin Gale, the museum director will talk to the group in more detail about Louis Wain and furthermore we will see the photograph by Surrealist photographer Benji Reid, which the BADA Friends helped to purchase, as it features in the museum’s current exhibition A Way from Home: Bethlem Artist on Longing and Belonging.
