Chinese Export Hardwood Games Table

To celebrate BADA Week 2022 Anthony Outred has chosen to feature this exceptional Chinese Export Hardwood Games Table.

Date: Circa 1790.

The interior carcase bears some Chinese hand written characters.

This satinwood banded and ebony and ivory strung games table is in the form of a sofa table with fall flaps to each end. It has a reversible panel top, the underside revealing a chess board. This top can be removed and slid into the grooves below the drawer when playing backgammon.

The removable backgammon tray is inlaid with alternating ivory and ebony pointed obelisks surmounted by geometric detail. In the centre of the board, small black and white diamond shaped devices surround a circular medallion.

Dimensions:

Width open 44 ¾” (114 cm).
Width closed 24 ½” (62 cm).
Depth 21 ¾” (55.5 cm).
Height  30 ½” (77 cm).

See a related Chinese gaming box supplied by Chippendale to Ninian Home at Paxton House in 1774.

A similar table is also referenced in the Noel Terry collection Fairfax House York.
