About
Sutcliffe Galleries
Sutcliffe Galleries is a long established family art business, dealing in fine paintings from the 18th, 19th & 20th centuries, and advising on all aspects of collecting paintings, framing, conservation, hanging, lighting and insurance.
In 1947 George Sutcliffe began to specialize in 19th century paintings and bought his first gallery in Bradford, a prosperous city at that time, with a rich Victorian history.
In 1971 the gallery relocated to Harrogate, with George’s son, Gary, as partner and principal buyer.
It became established as one of the few provincial concerns of international repute to specialize in the field of 19th century British and Continental paintings.
Gary Sutcliffe
Following George’s death in 1975, Gary carried out sole responsibility for the establishment and its future and was joined in 1976, by his wife, Helen.
Coming herself from a long-established family antique business in Harrogate, Helen had the experience to take over the running of the Harrogate gallery, leaving Gary free to travel extensively, at home and abroad, concentrating his knowledge on the sourcing of paintings.
The gallery relocated again in 1990 to its present elegant premises in Royal Parade and continues, with an enviable reputation, whether advising on a single purchase or in forming an entire collection.
Premises and Associations
Sutcliffe Galleries have been members of the British Antique Dealers’ Association since 1978, and Helen Sutcliffe was its Vice-Chairman between 2006 and 2007 and Northern Regional Representative between 1996 and 2012.
Located in the heart of Harrogate’s exclusive Montpellier Quarter, the Sutcliffe Contemporary Gallery was launched in 2005 to compliment the long-established family art gallery in the town.
Run by the founder’s grand-daughter, Antonia Sutcliffe, and managed by Lizzy Wood, an accomplished ceramic artist, the gallery prides itself on exhibiting an eclectic mix of original contemporary art from a selection of outstanding British and European artists, but with an emphasis on northern works.
Displayed in a light and airy showroom, paintings are accompanied with a beautiful collection of hand-made jewellery, ceramics, bronzes and signed limited edition prints. The wide range of pieces on show offers a unique opportunity to satisfy all tastes.
Exhibitions
Throughout the year solo and group exhibitions are held giving clients a unique opportunity to meet the artists and enjoy a pleasant evening in a relaxed and informal gallery.
The new on-line gallery offers clients the ability to view recent acquisitions in the comfort of their own home and select artwork for delivery with assurance of the quality of their individual piece.
