About

At Christopher Coles Research we offer a range of services aimed at dealers and private collectors wishing to investigate items in their possession.

Our core interests are 18th century English furniture and related items of decoration including items connected to the China trade such as mirror paintings and pieces of Chinese export furniture. We have an extensive archive of images of such pieces that we use as the starting point for much of our work.

In addition, we have worked on objects as diverse as carved marble pedestals with heraldic decoration, a pair of early 19th century bronze cannon latterly mounted as display pieces on a steam yacht, an enormous carved wooden coat of arms and a series of gouaches derived from Aesop's Fables.

Our services include:

-Research utilising primary sources in libraries, archives and record offices throughout the UK.

-Searching newspaper archives for references to particular items.

-Locating images of items in situ in historic interiors.

-Cataloguing items and locating comparable examples that have either come on to the art market or are a part of well-known collections worldwide.

-Writing catalogue entries, blog posts and articles (examples of past work available upon request).

-Digitising collections of photographs or other ephemera and offering advice on undertaking digitisation projects and creating image archives.

Our rates are calculated on an hourly, daily or project basis as appropriate and we are happy to discuss setting limits on the amount of time taken on a project in order to keep within a certain budget where applicable.
