Death of the ExpertThe Death of the (Art) Expert - NOW SOLD OUT

A discussion about the increasing resistance to connoisseurship and why it matters.

Date: Tuesday, 14th November 2023.
Location: Cromwell Place, London SW7 2JE.
Time: 19:00.

Specialised knowledge is inherent in every profession and art dealing is no exception. However, the expertise employed by art dealers is more nuanced than other occupations, with no formal education or accreditation required. The general rise of distrust in experts, amplified by the internet and social media, has led to an increased misunderstanding of the position of the art dealer in the art ecosystem and the value of their connoisseurship.

This panel seeks to clarify the crucial role of the art dealer and how their expertise underpins the market.

Panellist:

Dr Costas Paraskevaides, ArtAncient
Rosemary Bandini, Rosemary Bandini Japanese Art
Daniel Somlo, Somlo & OMEGA Vintage
Karen Taylor, Karen Taylor Fine Art

Moderator: Ashley Gallant, BADA

Ben Maggs MasterclassBefore We Too Into The Dust Descend’: The Barrister, The Bookbinders And The Titanic With Ben Maggs.

Tuesday 7th November at 2.30pm – Part of BADA Week.

On 21st of July 1884 a retired lawyer turned amateur bookbinder named Thomas James Cobden-Sanderson completed the tooling on his first book.  This marked, to borrow the phrase from G.D. Hobson, the birth of modern bookbinding, and it launched a grand revival of the art in Britain. In July of 1912 the bookbinder Francis Sangorski drowned off Selsey Bill, only six weeks after his masterpiece, one of the most lavish bindings ever conceived, had itself gone down with the Titanic.

Between these dates the world of bookbinding experienced an almost unparalleled flourishing of creativity and invention in the form and design of the book, and the nature of the professional trade was forever altered by the inexorable tide of social change and the rise and fall of economic fortunes.  Join Ben Maggs, for a tour through this near thirty- year spree of fabulous bindings and revolutionary binders.
