Farnley Hall is justly famous for its association with J M W Turner, who visited first in 1808 and then regularly until his host, patron and friend Walter Fawkes’ death in 1825.

Fawkes bought about 200 of Turner’s watercolours and oils, and quite a number of those showing the house and Yorkshire scenery are to be seen here.

The Elizabethan house, much altered, is overshadowed by John Carr’s magnificent addition begun in 1786.

Few would disagree with Pevsner’s assessment that the house “is perhaps John Carr’s masterpiece”.

Ruskin, on his last visit to the house in 1884, declared that, “Farnley is a unique place, there is nothing like it in the world – a place where a great genius was loved and appreciated, who did all his best work for that place, where it is treasured up like a monument in a shrine.”
