By kind permission of Lady Juliet and Dr Tadgell

This beautiful 18th century house was completed in around 1707 by Dame Elisabeth Aucher for her young son Sir Hewitt. Her husband, Sir Anthony had died in 1692 leaving her with considerable gambling debts and four young children to support.

By 1704 she had reduced the debt and improved the 2000 acre estate, a formidable task. However, her fortunes did not prosper - mainly due to her second son Sir Hewitt who was weak and impressionable - but the rest of the story will be revealed when we visit.

The present owners will give the Friends a guided tour of their important collection of paintings and decorative objects.

Lady Juliet is the daughter of the late Peter Wentworth- Fitzwilliam, the last member of the Fitzwilliam family to live at Wentworth Woodhouse and so we will see some of the furniture that was originally made for that extraordinary house in Yorkshire and some of the stunning art collection.

For those of you who do not wish to drive then there are trains from London to Canterbury. There are two stations in Canterbury.

However, the faster trains go from Charing Cross to Canterbury West it is then a 10/15 minute taxi journey to the house. Taxis are available at both railway stations.
