West Dean College

Information on the work of The British Antique Dealer's Cultural & Educational Trust and how to support BADA's charitable activities.

BADA Cultural & Educational Trust

BADA's charitable activities are driven by the tenet that a good antique dealer is the custodian and preserver of the artworks that he, or she, handles for future generations.

There is an urgent need to train that next generation of gifted restorers and conservators.

Consequently, the BADA Cultural and Educational Trust actively supports restoration courses at West Dean College.

Through its Cultural & Educational Trust the Association contributes financially to the College and our members offer their specialist knowledge and practical guidance to benefit students and staff. The Trust has supported the clocks, metalware, ceramics and furniture courses at the College and BADA members act as advisers for these particular courses.

The Trust has over the years supported more than 40 students, some of whom have gone on to set up their own restoration workshops or to work for leading cultural institutions or museums.  Others have later become significant antique dealers in their own right.

The involvement with West Dean and the restoration/conservation courses was started in 1972 by BADA furniture dealer and former BADA president Michael Trevor-Venis, after discussions with Edward James, the original owner of West Dean and patron of the Surrealists.

Internationally renowned for excellence in conservation and arts education, West Dean College provides its dedicated students with all the skills necessary to fulfil this vital role.

BADA Friends

Members of the public can actively support the Cultural and Educational Trust by becoming a member of the BADA Friends.

The Friends run a series of exclusive, private events throughout the year, frequently gaining access to private homes and collections rarely open to the general public.

Popular events include dealers master-classes, visits to private collections and guided walks.

Friends members also gain complimentary admission to many of the UK's leading antiques fairs and arts events.
