As part of their display at TEFAF Maastricht, BADA members Cohen & Cohen will be exhibiting a collection of contemporary porcelain sculpture by leading Chinese-American Ceramicist Cliff Lee.

Lee is well known in the United States with pieces displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution, and only permits Michael and Ewa Cohen to show his work in Europe.

The artist has a remarkable story, having moved to the US from Taiwan as a teenager, Lee studied to become a doctor at medical school, specialising in neurosurgery. At the age of 27, following five years in practice he took a sabbatical and enrolled in a ceramics course where, in his own words, he “fell in love, at the first touch of clay.”

Cliff first came to prominence in 1993 when he was invited to contribute a piece of his work to the White House Collection of American Crafts. Perhaps his greatest achievement in ceramic art was to recreate the formula for the imperial yellow glaze of the 15th century Ming court, which took him 17 years to perfect.

His pieces are sure to prove an interesting contrast to Cohen & Cohen’s collection of fine 18th century Chinese export porcelain.

Cohen and Cohen’s Cliff Lee collection will be on display at Stand 244 at TEFAF Maastricht March 11-20
