About Tadema Gallery

Following successful careers as photo journalists, David and Sonya Newell-Smith first began trading in jewellery in 1978, inspired by their passion for artist-designed jewellery from 1860 to 1960.

Their gallery, Tadema Gallery, is based in a charming period shop in Charlton Place adjacent to Islington’s famed Camden Passage. The area is well-known by collectors for its interesting antique shops and its lively, vibrant atmosphere.

David and Sonya’s eclectic and carefully-chosen stock spans mid-Victorian to Arts and Crafts jewellery, with a special emphasis on the latter. Designers including Henry Wilson, John Paul Cooper, Pugin, Burges, Giuliano, Castellani and Phillips are all well-represented. Works designed by Archibald Knox for Liberty & Co also feature, being one of David and Sonya’s favourite designers.

Both David and Sonya have been members of the Society of Jewellery Historians and have previously exhibited at a number of fairs including the Grosvenor House Art & Antiques Fair. Following the demise of the fair they now prefer to hold an annual summer exhibition in their gallery.

Elected to BADA membership for Jewellery: Art Nouveau, Jugendstil, British Arts & Crafts, Art Deco and artist-designed jewels, 1960.
