Description / Expertise
Sandalwood with ivory veneers engraved and highlighted with lac, the lock, hinges and mounts silvered. Of rectangular form with two lids, one opening to buffalo horn and ivory pen tray, lidded compartments and two inkpot wells. The fall opens to a velvet lined writing slope and opens again to an interior for writing accessories and two small drawers.
The box is of high status and would have been highly prized even when new. A similar example on loan to the V & A from the Royal Collection was given to Edward V11 when Prince of Wales on a visit to India in the 1850s by the Maharajah of Vizianagram (now in Andrha Predesh).
