D60. NEALE & BAILEY, NO 8 St PAULS CHURCHYARD A REGENCY FLAT FRONTED MAHOGANY CISTERN BAROMETER.
This is a particularly good example of this type of barometer. It has an architectural top with a central turned brass finial. The front door protecting the scale has chevron stringing to its border and is concave to either side at the bottom. The veneers to the front of the body of the barometer are laid chevron fashion and are bordered with matching stringing. The turned hemispherical cistern cover is ribbed to the centre and extends up the mercury tube.
The attractively engraved silvered dial, which is signed by the maker in flowing script at the top, has the usual indications to the left; Very dry, Fair, Much Rain, etc & on the right the barometric scale graduated from 28 to 31 with a sliding register to one side. A refinement, not usually seen on this type of barometer, is the substantial brass screw at the bottom which may be wound up to raise the column of mercury for travelling.
Length overall. 39"
