A SADELI, IVORY AND SANDALWOOD PARQUETRY GLOVE BOX
Calcutta
Circa 1855.
The rectangular glove box of sandalwood, with a slightly chamfered, hinged lid, decorated to the top and all sides with panels of geometric parquetry in sadeli work, sandalwood and ivory, with sadeli borders and ebony and ivory edge mouldings, on short, turned ivory feet.
There is a similar sadeli wood and ivory glove box in the Victoria and Albert Museum collections, ( V&A: 01157 (IS) ), discussed in Dr. Amin Jaffer’s book, Furniture from British India and Ceylon, p.234.
