RARE GEORGIAN URN TEA CADDY ( England c. 1770 )
Medium
Very Rare Painted Urn Tea caddy circa 1770
Description / Expertise
Outstanding rare Urn Tea Caddy made of Cuban Mahogany, with polychrome decoration, including a trailing spray of delicate white & green foliage around the lid's edge and top edge of the caddy itself. The urn body and dome of the lid are beautifully painted in a 'trompe l'oeil' style to simulate fluted sides.
There is a delicately-carved Ivory fluted finial on the top of the lid and simple ivory key profile. Beautiful untouched patination. A superp, unique piece representing a classical and elegant period of craftsmanship.
The Urn Tea Caddy was last exhibited at the BADA and Christies Art Treasures Exhibition between October 12 and November 5, 1932, which is shown on a circular label contained in the bottom of the Tea Caddy and reads as follows:
BRITISH ANTIQUE DEALERS' ASSOCIATION, ART TREASURES EXHIBITION, CHRISTIES 1932, No.239.
