Description / Expertise
English Pine box with sloping lid, circa 1700. It has its original hinges, lock, escutcheon, and interior lipped shelf. The box is covered in its original red and black paint which was intended to simulate Walnut. It is rare for pine boxes to survive in this condition due to the general fragility of the timber and susceptibility to wood worm.
Literature
It is illustrated in Victor Chinnery’s “Oak Furniture. The British Tradition”, Figure 3:427, Page 377.
