Description / Expertise
A Continental dipper or shallow cup, carved in relief with military symbols; a spread winged eagle holds a shield-shaped banner inset with silver coloured metal, a crown above and thunderbolts emitted from clouds beneath. Within the fluting at the base is an extinguished torch, the plume of smoke reaching a mother of pearl inlaid medal of the French Legion d'honneur. Around the upper edge are swagged curtains and a silver coloured metal rim. Finally there is a carved bugbear face and metal fixing ring. French circa 1800.
The Legion of Honour, or in full the National Order of the Legion of Honour is a French order established by Napoleon Bonaparte, First Consul of the First Republic, on 19 May 1802.
