Description / Expertise
A fine George I burr walnut and feather banded secretaire cabinet on chest in the manner of William Old & John Ody. The top with cavetto moulded cornice above a pair of inset mirrored doors opening to reveal an internal arrangement of various sized drawers fitted with gilt brass ring handles, with a central pull out candle shelf. The bottom half with a fitted secretaire drawer to the top with an arrangement of drawers and pigeon holes, below three long graduated, oak lined drawers fitted with engraved plate handle, standing on shaped bracket feet.
John Ody became free of the joiners company in 1723 and probably about this time teamed up with William Old to trade from their St.Paul’s church yard address. Some of their furniture was identified with a trade label bearing featuring their shop sign of a castle. A very similar cabinet with the same unusual central candle shelf was recorded in the “Dictionary of marked London Furniture”, another very similar labelled piece of identical dimensions to this was exhibited at Grosvenor House in 2004 by Messers Brian Rollerston Ltd.
