Description / Expertise

A fine Georgian spherical boxwood pill silverer, still retaining remnants of the silver foil inside. The removable lid, held in place by two interior lugs, is above the base, which is raised on a concave stem and stepped circular foot. The colour and patination needs to be seen to be believed!

These pill silverers were used by apothecaries, having made their pills, they would be moisturised with mucilage of acacia and put them in these containers with a silver leaf, gently rolling the pills within, which would coat them ready for storage in a bottle.
