Description / Expertise

This bureau bookcase is a rare, small size. The narrow. horizontal panels in the bookcase doors and the pair of panels in between the bureau and the cupboards are unusual, early features which, in addition to its elegant proportion, give it gravitas. It retains its original fittings and is a very practical as a bureau with ample storage. It is very original, only the brassware has been replaced which is customary for utilitarian pieces.

In two parts. The top section has an ogee moulded cornice above a pair of panelled doors which open to reveal the bookcase. The bottom section has a fall front opening to reveal a bureau fitted with pigeon holes and drawers and a well. The frieze is fitted with lopers above a panelled section with a pair of panelled doors below. They open to reveal fitted drawers above two cupboards. The sides are characteristically plain. The ironware is original, and the brassware is replaced. Standing on front bun feet and back stile feet. Excellent original colour and patina. English, 1675-1725.
