Description / Expertise

A classic oyster olivewood chest of drawers of the William and Mary period in a very original state of preservation.

This small well proportioned chest consists of two short and three long well graduated drawers and stands on (replaced) bun feet. The top is veneered with sections of olivewood oysters intertwined with boxwood-strung roundels and scrolls and the edges are banded with light coloured holly or sycamore. The overall decorative effect of the above is quite stunning, as are the olivewood oysters and banded edges of the sides and drawer fronts.

The colour and patination are exceptional, as the veneers have faded to a beautiful mellow hue.

The engraved plate brass handles and escutcheons are sympathetic replacements.

For a very similar olivewood chest of drawers see plate 2:30 on page 51 of ‘English Furniture 1660-1714 from Charles II to Queen Anne’ by Adam Bowett.
